About HALT

HALT run the IDVA service for Leeds and works in partnership with Leeds Women’s Aid and Behind Closed Doors to deliver the Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS).

 

HALT is an independent and confidential charity and works in Leeds with high risk victims of domestic abuse to reduce their risk of further harm and increase their safety.  HALT offers legal support and advocacy to women and men who have experienced domestic, sexual or honour based violence, stalking and forced marriage to address immediate safety issues and also practical steps to help them protect themselves and their children.  We also look at longer term solutions such as housing options and remedies available from the civil and criminal courts

What is domestic abuse - facts, figures and signs

Domestic violence is defined by the Government as ‘any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can include, but is not limited to: psychological, physical, sexual, financial, and emotional’

 

1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse and every year over 2 million people suffer some form of domestic abuse.  Seven women a month are killed by a current or ex-partner.  Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual orientation, disability or social class.
